"Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man." (Proverbs 3:3-4)
I almost named this blog after these Bible verses. There's so much to talk about in just these two.
What happens if you have kindness, but not the truth? What happens when you're truthful, but unkind? It's interesting to think about people, societies and history with these questions in mind.
What do you think?

Well, I for one will not be responsible for you curling up to die . . .
Kindness. I'm FOREVER telling the kids to be kind to each other. I have two speeches that I'm constantly giving them. One is to "be kind" and the other is to "be thankful." Those are the two Biggies for me.
As for truth, I'm in the middle of reading the little tiny book by Francis Schaeffer, Escape from Reason, wherein size of a book has nothing to do with size of content. My head is spinning. Anyway, that book is really amazing in presenting the way truth has been manipulated by humanism/postmodernism so that man is sinking in despair. Without truth -- namely that God is Creator/Lord of all, and we are inexarably linked and made in His image to worship Him -- there is no hope.
So, all this to say, if you have kindness, but no truth, then that kindness becomes meaningless. There are no rules, no consequences because kindness cannot be defined.
As for truth without kindness? All I can think of is certain people at church, whatever church, who tell people things "out of love". Shudder.
Boy, this is a big can of worms. I'll stop for now.
Holly, just wanted to let you know I put you on my blogroll. : )
Thanks for keeping me from dying!
I'll have to look for that Francis Schaeffer book. Those were great comments. Thanks! I think kindness plus truth is a huge theme in the Bible. (After all, who is kindness/love? Who is truth?) It's a huge theme in life. I heard a speaker recently who said our culture has swung from truth toward love, from words toward images, from logic toward emotion, when we really need them all. You're right--a big can of worms! It would be fun to look for some more verses and do another post on this sometime.
